Authentic mid-century Japanese folk art chess set featuring hand-turned, lathe-carved wood pieces styled as traditional Kokeshi figures.
Each piece is individually hand-painted with expressive character details, distinct headpieces, and traditional Japanese robes/motifs (red vs. black painted bases/accents).
Includes the original matching wooden folding chessboard case with an inlaid playing surface and dedicated red/blue lined interior storage compartments.
Case folds shut with original brass-tone metal hinges and latch hardware for secure storage.
Condition Notes:
Chess pieces: Very clean and intact with vibrant original painted details; minor age-appropriate surface wear.
Wooden folding case/board: Structurally sound with working hinges and latch. Exterior and playing surface show light scuffs, minor edge rubbing, and vintage patina consistent with gentle use.
Interior compartments are intact and protect the pieces properly. There appears to be the previous owner's information blacked out on one of the inside panels. See Photos.
