This item is a beautiful, authentic antique Chinese architectural temple carving fragment, likely dating from the mid-to-late Qing Dynasty (19th century).
Hand-carved from a single piece of wood, this fragment features an intricate, openwork relief sculpture of a Phoenix (Fenghuang), an enduring cultural symbol representing grace, high status, and virtue.
The piece features its original, heavily weathered red polychrome lacquer finish highlighted with traditional gold leaf (gilt) accents. The right end features an unpainted mortise-and-tenon notch, showing how it was originally secured into the support beams of a traditional Chinese ancestral hall or temple structure.The reverse side reveals rough-hewn tool marks, character-rich weathering, paint loss.
This fragment is highly collectible and makes an excellent freestanding curio, shelf accent, or unique piece of mounted wall art.
